Episode 868 With all the noise from the alt-right and the alt-left, our nations history is being drowned out in a sea of accusations from both sides of the political spectrum. What is missing is the main reason the Civil war started in the fist place, taxes!!! The tariff act of 1828 was an unfair act for the south, because it did nothing to protect southern production of the crops that were grown there, and it enabled the north to exploit duty free import of the same crops the south grew! The south sought relief, but the crony capitalist who controlled the federal governmnet didn’t care.
Vice President John Calhoun “warned that if the tariff of 1828 was not repealed, South Carolina would secede. It cited Jefferson and Madison for the precedent that a state had the right to reject or nullify federal law.” 1States rights over the federal governmnet were at stake in the south, and in this matter the US Constitution was on the side of the south!!! Slavery wasn’t an issue until the north needed to rally the troops to win an unjust war!!!
