If I were asked which societal movements scares me the most today, that would have to be the #MeToo movement. I’m supportive of anyone that is a victim of sexual harassment or abuse being able to seek justice. But justice has two sides the accusers and the accused.
American court rooms as well as the court of public opinion, should always operate under the maxim of “Innocent until proven guilty.” The more serous the accusation, the more important this maxim is. The accuser should always supply the burden of proof of any accusation. A proper investigation should be performed and evidence supplied or sought. Only if there is evidence of wrong doing can a case proceed through the court system, including the court of public opinion.
Far too often in today’s society the accusation is enough to convict somebody without offering any evidence. What happens if the accuser lied? Do they get punished for any damage done to the innocent party? When we are talking about sexual crimes, we need to trust, but verify. The #MeToo movement has forgotten this. Whatever #MeToo’s goals are, they need to seek the truth, not political points.
